Cherine (Mother of a 6 year old boy) Treated with Syllable-timed Speech

When my son Anthony was 6 years old we noticed that he was stuttering. We thought that he was just getting excited and wanted to say it quickly. His condition didn’t improve but got worse. We attended a forum on stuttering and learnt that stuttering needed to be treated as young as possible. It cannot be neglected as it might affect the child’s self-esteem as he gets older. It may lead to many other psychological problems as he grows. We then decided to have him assessed by a Speech Therapist.
On our first visit was with Gwyn. Over a short playing and chatting session with Anthony, Gwyn confirmed that he is indeed stuttering. We started a series of consultation and treatment with Gwyn. During each session Gwyn will engage Anthony in various games and activities which will encourage him to speak using the syllable-timed speech. She also taught me how to continue similar sessions at home.
In the course of the treatment sessions, it created additional bonding time for Anthony and myself. I am now able to communicate better with Anthony. Gwyn suggested various ways of asking questions to promote better communication as I had a tendency to ask close-ended questions.
Over the treatment period, Anthony showed signs of improvement and he is now able to speak much better than before. Gwyn is very friendly and she will prepare different games to play with Anthony on each of his visit. Anthony loves to attend the sessions and will look forward to them. Gwyn is very patient and will explain the technique clearly so that I could confidently continue the treatment at home. She also shared with me some parenting skills so that I could apply them on my 3 young children.
Thank you Gwyn for your guidance and patience. We enjoyed our sessions with you and we are glad that we came forward to seek early treatment. Anthony is now able to speak without stuttering and that has made him a more confident child.
